Formation and Early History of the Los Angeles Dodgers

One of the oldest baseball clubs in MLB is the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, the history of the club goes way back into the past, even before it was transferred to Los Angeles.

Creation of the Club (1883)

The team was created in 1883 in Brooklyn. The team started its journey playing in minor leagues but later got admission into the National League in 1890.

In its initial days, the team carried various names such as:

Brooklyn Atlantics (1883-1884)

Brooklyn Grays (1885-1887)

Brooklyn Bridegrooms (1888-1898)

Brooklyn Superbas (1899-1910)

Brooklyn Robins (1914-1919)

How the Team Got Its Name “Dodgers”

The team got its name because the people living in Brooklyn would always have to dodge trolleys while walking on the bustling streets. Thus, they were referred to as “Trolley Dodgers,” but then the name was shortened to “Dodgers.”

Rise and Popularity of the Team

From the early 1900s to the 1940s and 1950s, the Dodgers gained success, and their popularity increased tremendously. The team made its way into their first-ever World Series in 1916.

Most Important Events

In 1947, the Dodgers did something that marked one of the most significant events in baseball history by signing:

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson became the first African American player in modern Major League Baseball, breaking the color barrier and changing sports history forever.

First World Series Title

The Brooklyn Dodgers clinched their first World Series title in 1955 by beating:

New York Yankees

The Brooklyn Dodgers’ first-ever World Series title is one of the most memorable events for the team and its supporters.

Relocation to Los Angeles (1958)

In 1958, the owner:

Walter O’Malley

moved the team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, naming them the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Los Angeles Dodgers became the first baseball team in the American Major League on the west coast.

Initially, the Los Angeles Dodgers started playing at:

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
